Bobcat Ranch

6,800-acre working cattle ranch in Winters, California, using silvopasture to advance Audubon CA’s goals for Blue Oak woodland and rangeland in the state

Silvopasture plays a dual role at Bobcat Ranch: The practice helps to maintain the ecosystem that currently supports existing Blue Oaks and the conditions needed for establishing new Blue Oaks. Ranch manager Dash Weidhofer uses silvopasture as a tool to experiment with how best to both conserve and restore this unique ecosystem, recognizing the role that grazing provides in reestablishing the ecological disturbance that is essential to healthy grasslands. Learn how Weidhofer establishes and protects young oak trees on a remote, fire-prone site in a dry-summer Mediterannean climate zone.
